Scientific and Mathematical Teaching Models at the Whipple Museum (Cambridge, Feb 2014)

Whilst trudging through Cambridge the other day, we stumbled across the small but very entertaining Whipple Museum in Cambridge University, which starts with a very interesting glass sculpture cabinet near the front entrance. We had made a few abortive attempts into some museums in Cambridge, but the highlight for me was most certainly the Whipple, where I was attracted by the botanical models, and then the intricate glass sculptures of fungi (some quite recognizable for any wannabe-mycologists), which for me takes it to a whole new level.

Since coming to the Royal College of Art I've had the fortune to attend anatomy and facial reconstruction classes, which to be honest, previously seemed to me to be a kind of moot cause, since I was not inherently interested in being able to accurately replicate the shape, color or form of something from nature (unless it was just for FUN).

I don't consider myself that sort of artist and I certainly have approached traditional forms like drawing, painting and sculpture as nothing more than a dilettante or hobbyist. (Granted, it doesn't mean I don't have the ability to apply myself properly with a little effort, but it is not something I would imagine myself devoting my life like the obsessive artist in Balzac's Unknown Masterpiece. I am not so much concerned with colour, shadow, accuracy of hand, and things like that.

In fact, I have always thought it might be better bypassing this entire step of studying natural forms (biology, botany) and going straight to the point where one tries to make up something entirely new. But in the end, in trying to do my recent Kensington Gall project, it was obvious that in order to get to that point where I can make up something completely new, then I'll still need to study all the other steps along the way in detail. Perhaps to be able to learn it all so that I can unlearn it and rebuild it anew?









Fungi Models

And one very funny thing is that if there is one thing I have learnt from attending a few talks at Imperial, it is that when it comes down to it, even the most complicated science can be explained in simple words. I suppose a lot of complicated subjects are very comprehensible when presented in the right way. Like if it is presented through the right image. At a talk I attended given by a Neuropsychopharmacologist, the ability to map the brain was critical to his job as it was from visualizing the brain that one was able to tell which drugs affected which portion of the brain, and also enabling one to test which portions of the brain are active when one is doing a particular activity. However, at the crux of it, it was still a matter of scanning, making an image of the brain, and testing out drugs by monitoring what effects the drugs had on the resultant images that were produced.

Whilst the technical portion of medical imaging is certainly very impressive, when I think about it, a fair bit of "art-science" collaborations currently out there don't really seem to go beyond that level of representation or realism. I was not aware of this until this year, but there are even specialised areas such as scientific illustration and science communication - a whole area and perhaps even a profession for people completely dedicated to deciding on each and every delicate nuance to how science is represented or communicated to others!

An artistically rendered book consisting of cross-sections of a human heart might be the epitome the meeting of art and science to some, but for me that is at best mundane, or even boring, largely because it does not challenge the boundaries of perception or accepted notions, which I imagine to be the point of making art. If art does not pierce, does not challenge, does not say things, then why make art? For ornamental purposes? It is much less interesting than someone modeling a heart and launching off into an almost ridiculous premise like, "what if humans lived in zero gravity for a long time - what would the shape of human hearts evolve over time?" Now that would have been much more interesting.

I do delight in going back to school and spending the time going to these museums and lectures (especially in London and the vicinity) and feeling like there is still a wealth of knowledge to be gleaned from the simplest, old model used from decades ago. An instructive model says so much not only about the actual topic but also the approaches to teaching and how they intended to present things to students. I was so delighted to see all these botanical models. It reminded me of a book I had read from the Shirley Sherwood Gallery at Kew Gardens - the first gallery dedicated solely to botanical art - and staggering to think of the labour and the attempts to accumulate and represent the knowledge that today we take for granted. So much of this is so amazing already, and so beautiful that I can scarcely see myself being able to reproduce such sculptures and images with such finesse. So in a way I think a better contribution I could make to the area would be to extend the understanding of it through some intelligent speculation.

(I actually grew up with a very similar set of Lego characters! I had the schoolroom lego, the country western lego, the firetruck lego, and the ambulance/civil defence disaster lego set. Best part was when you combined all of the sets and mashed up all the school children and indians on horseback together with the scene of a disaster with all the emergency services and hazmat crew...)

A theme tune for works of investigative journalism

One late night whilst listening to probably every factual programme there is to listen to on bbc iplayer (while working on my NewBiologist project into the wee hours of the night) I suddenly made a shocking discovery. The so-called "BBC Outlook opening tune" that I have been searching for quite some time is actually the "BBC File on 4 opening tune". It is actually called Fanfare for a Brass Quintet, written by Richard Rodney Bennett and performed by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble.

For some reason I had become familiar with the song being used to introduce various pieces of investigative journalism about serious problems or injustices, but I must have completely confused it with Outlook which has a similar topic focus on major issues. Outlook's programme differs from File on 4 in that it is always about the viewpoint of people who have experienced something directly (hence their personal "outlook" on an issue) - whereas File on 4 usually involves a broader investigation and more interviewees giving a range of diverse views about one serious issue. (Last year I actually went so far as to listen to all the Outlook programmes for the last few years, searching for the brass theme tune, and when I still did not hear it, I even tried to write a letter to Outlook asking them what happened to their theme tune. They never replied; they must have thought I was crazy.)

File on 4 always begins with a short (and serious) introduction and perhaps a soundclip of the affected parties describing their ordeals or situations, punctuated by this brass band opening song before going on with the rest of the programme.

For me, the song chosen as File on 4's theme tune seemed to only have the sole purpose conferring upon the story a greater sense of stately gravitas. Why else would you choose a brass theme tune, and one with a particularly "english" character at that? However, what I perceived in the past (and what made me so interested in this song) was how the use of the song was made complicated by the fact that some of the stories were not strictly UK centric but also frequently involved other stories from around the world, including some sensitive stories about race, ethnicity, religion - stories that might be about africa, the middle east, or even islam and its practice in the UK - stories with which an English brass song intro would sound a little strange!

In some cases, I felt that instead of lending a lovely, quiet dignity to the story, it actually had the effect of producing a rather curious juxtaposition (and I like it when there seems to be something ever so slightly wrong or jarring about things). Don't get me wrong, I completely love the song. But all the same I can see how it is a very conscious artistic direction for the programme, unlike Outlook which uses the songs and sounds from its stories to open its programme instead of having a fixed theme tune. But in the end, is there any perfect theme tune out there for works of investigative journalism? I suppose File on 4 is fortunate in that I guess it can be as stately as it wants. But let's say one were without all these cultural baggage of being the BBC and being "british" then what on earth would constitute a suitable theme tune for an investigative journalism programme? It would be so hard to make an objectively suitable song.

Exotic fruit and vegetable: Pepino, Curuba, Tamarillo, Lulo, Pawpaw, Kaki, Kohlrabi, Passionfruit





The Fresh & Fruity around the corner from our house is undoubtedly one of the main reasons I like living in Stamford Hill (despite its distance from RCA). I've always thought that having access and proximity to a good market or greengrocer is crucial to one's overall nutrition, because let's face it if you are hungry you are not going to want to walk very far or wait very long to get or make the food (unless you are strangely perverse, or George). When in South Kensington I have the tendency to devolve into a diet of box soups, instant bulgur pots and crisps from the vending machine, or the occasional starvation-induced splurge at the school canteen, but that is because that is the food which is most accessible to me there.

Recently I have been working on a project relating to plant growth regulators and I watched the most amazing fruit documentary (Thanks for the recommendation Katie!) so now I am even more mad for fruit. The funny thing is that around the same time I suddenly realised Fresh & Fruity were importing in different fruits and vegetable. (Whose smart idea was it? I'm totally sold on it.) Since their speciality is just fruit and vegetable, they really have a lot of it and its usually much better and cheaper than the Sainsburys/Asda (unless you want to have everything pre-washed for you in spring water). Sometimes you even get a whole box of produce for a pound or two when they're in excess and on their last legs. The other day I made mango sorbet out of a big box of mangos that I got for a pound. Recently they had an exotic fruit sale and we were fortunate to have gone there on the very day the fruits were being set out in their pallets for sale! They were so exotic that they even had to have long descriptions explaining what they were like on the inside!





The Fruit Portraits


Pepino Melon








The fruit of the Solanum muricatum is also known as sweet pepino, pepino dulce, pepino melon, melon pear. It is distantly related to melons and pears but more closely related to tomato and eggplant. This particular pepino melon came from Ecuador. The thin but surprisingly hardy skin is covered in brown stripes and on the inside the flesh is soft anne you will find a hollow in which there are white flat round seeds in a bunch. It tasted like a rock melon with a lighter, more delicate taste.


Curuba (Banana Passionfruit)








The Passiflora tarminiana is also known as Banana Passionfruit, banana poka (hawaii), curuba sabanera blanca (colombia), taxo/tauso/tacso (ecucaor), tumbo (bolivia). It is related to the passionfruit. Interestingly this is considered an invasive species in New Zealand as it thrives there and it is now illegal to sell or cultivate the plants and there are some concerns that the plant spreads too quickly in Australia and Hawaii. The taste of the fruit itself was very curious, sweet and quite tart with edible black seeds covered in orange pulp that is so intensely colored it is almost red. The seeds of the fruit had a lot more bite to them than a passionfruit we had also bought for comparison and we even worried for a moment that perhaps we shouldn't be eating the seeds. The fruit is covered with tiny hairs and it turns from green to light green/yellow as it ripens. Interestingly, it bruises very easily and is much unlike the passionfruit which you can throw at someone's head without worrying that the passionfruit will be dented. I found it to be very tart.


Tamarillo








The fruit of the Solanum Betaceum is native to the Andes of Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Bolivia. It is also grown in other subtropical climates. It used to be known as "tree tomato" but the New Zealand Tree Tomato Promotions Council gave the fruit a new name to make it sound more exotic and seem less like a tomato. Tamarillo comes from the Maori word "tama" (leadership) and the Spanish word "amarillo" (yellow). I bought two types of tamarillos - red and yellow. The red one was more acidic and tart and the yellow one was softer and sweeter in general. Whilst the flesh is quite orange, the seeds are encased in bright red pulp which stains a bit as you cut or eat the fruit, the seeds are apparently edible but sometimes quite hard. In the end, it tasted like a mix between kiwifruit and tomato.


Lulo (Naranjilla)








The fruit of the Solanum quitoense is also known as naranjilla (ecuador, panama) or lulo (colombia). This one is from Colombia. The leaves of the plant have a very lovely shape so it is considered an ornamental plant in some parts; in general the plant itself is very delicate and cannot withstand high wind or sun, and is extremely susceptible to pests and diseases whenever grown on a large scale, often suffering from fungus attacks and pests. Apparently a few batches seeds had been sent to the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) in the 1910s and attempts were made to plant it in greenhouses but all of them died! There is another story about how great attempts were made to grow it in Florida in 1948 where they flourished and 20 plants were about to fruit when they were all unexpectedly all destroyed in a hurricane! Basically the story of the naranjilla and the many attempts to grow it elsewhere has been historically a sad one. The fruit is soft and easily damaged when it is ripe and god knows how it even survived to get here. Its skin is looks leathery on the outside and it apparently has lots of hairs on the outside which are usually rubbed off when the fruit is prepared for sale. Its insides look a bit like a tomato but it tastes like a pineapple crossed with a citrus plant of some sort.


Kaki (Persimmon/Sharonfruit)








The Persimmon or SharonFruit needs no introduction. Its very common in Asia and I've eaten so much of it in the past. To be honest this has been one of my favourite fruits from Fresh and Fruity. The only fun fact I can offer about it is that it is technically a berry, but due to its solidly turgid fleshiness we often don't think of it as a berry.


Pawpaw








The Pawpaw is actually just a small papaya. In the UK they are small, unlike the huge ones I'm used to seeing in Southeast asia.


Kohlrabi (German radish)








The Kohlrabi is cultivated through artifical selection to get its distinctive swollen shaped stem. It is related to cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, collard greens, and Brussels sprouts - they all come from the wild cabbage plant (Brassica oleracea).


Passionfruit








I bought this Passionfruit so as to be able to crossreference its taste with the Banana Passionfruit. To be honest I preferred the Passionfruit to the Banana Passionfruit as the passionfruit was much sweeter.

What happened next


The Kohlrabi never got eaten in the end. Unfortunately (or fortunately) after they sat on the arm of our sofa for a few weeks they eventually turned into some sort of vegetal housepets. We named one of them Smiles and the other Lao Wang. It is very hard to eat vegetables that you have given names and personalities. Maybe we will plant them in a pot for summer and give them a new life.

You might also have been wondering why there has been nary a blip from me online recently and it is because I have been slaving day and night over a synbio-related project at school which is about to come to fruition (ahem). This post has been days in the making because I can only manage to find a little bit of time in-between actual work to write these posts up. It has been really intense. Maybe more about my new projects in the next post.
